What is the Best Ornamental Grass to Grow in Queensland?

30 June 2022

Looking for a suitable ornamental grass for your’ project? You can start with Zoysia tenuifolia and blue fescue grass. Zoysia tolerates drought and light frost once they’re already established and they can be grown in full sun or semi shade. On the other hand, blue fescue grass also tolerates drought, heat and frost and can also be grown in semi shade or full sun.

How to choose the correct grass type

In Queensland, you should choose a grass type that can cope with the location’s dry conditions. This way, the grass can easily survive and thrive. Also, there will be less maintenance and fewer worries about their growth and appearance.

For example, Zoysia tenuifolia (also known as no-mow grass) can tolerate drought and only require medium water use. Once established, it can endure the heat and insufficient water while still maintaining their healthy dark green appearance. Another example is the blue fescue grass as mentioned above. It can resist heat and drought which is why it has become common in Queensland gardens (especially for use as a border and being planted on rockeries).

Other options are Lomandra Shara™ and Tulbaghia violacea (also known as society garlic). Lomandra Shara™ is also heat- and drought-resistant once established. It has been a great border plant and for controlling soil erosion. On the other hand, Tulbaghia violacea is also popular because aside from their drought tolerance, they have tall stems and attractive pink flowers.

Before you choose a grass type, it’s always good to verify that it will survive dry and drought conditions and only require low to medium water use. And yes, it’s also good to imagine how your entire garden will look once the grass is fully grown and slowly taking up the rockeries, borders and other areas of your garden.
